Growing up on the Sunshine coast, I was a Queensland School Boys representative in 2016. I was then selected to play for the Australian Men’s Sevens team, making my debut at the Wellington Sevens in 2017. I also played in the World Rugby Sevens Series in Sydney, Las Vegas and Vancouver. In 2018, I made my debut for the Queensland Reds playing Super Rugby.
Throughout my career, I have had some great coaches and I hope to be able to help younger athletes the way my coaches have helped me. I have been coaching Sunshine Coast Grammar Sevens team and the halfback academy at SCGS since I graduated in 2016. I have a lot of coaching experience with halfback specific training and feel I have a lot to offer athletes in this position.
I love seeing the improvement and progression of athletes I coach as well sharing my knowledge and experience with them. I like to keep things fun and not take things too seriously.

An amazing 10th birthday present for our son...the opportunity to get specific skills training with one of his heroes was fantastic and the smile upon my boy's face before, during and after the session was priceless. Tate was a fabulous coach, calm and friendly and wasted no time, was a great full session. I would highly recommend Tate. We are looking forward to booking more sessions.
There can be many varied and personal reasons a parent may choose to introduce their child to a sports mentoring or coaching program. Playbook offers so much more than the chance to spend some time with “a Red’s player”. Having spent the last 8 weeks homeschooling, our son James was very excited to train with Tate McDermott. This was his chance to improve his skills and physical capabilities on the rugby field.
However, as parents, we were looking to assist our son with his development of life skills such as etiquette, sportsmanship, and perseverance. Life skills such as these are taught through sports activities and applied beyond the sports context.
Tate’s relaxed and engaging manner allows him to connect with those who train with him easily. Talking about more than just rugby, Tate began explaining and demonstrating different skills, then offered feedback to James, before modifying tasks as needed to match our son’s level of ability. Very quickly, we noticed an improvement in his physical skills and abilities and closely followed by an enhancement in his self-confidence and connectedness.
The future sessions we have booked in with Tate offer a multitude of physical and developmental benefits. Thanks to Playbook for setting up this platform, we are excited to see the development of our son over the coming months.
Tate was amazing!! A great teacher. My son came away with new skills and areas to work on. 'The best birthday present ever' for any rugby mad young child a training session with your idol... highly recommended!!
Tate was fantastic with Felix from the very beginning, made him feel at ease. Training with his hero at Ballymore stadium is something I’m sure he will long remember! He learned half back specific skills which he will be able to put straight into his game and couldn’t wait to get home to show us his new passing skills. Felix summed it up as we drove away, ‘best day ever!’.
From the minute Tate introduced himself, you could see how easily and comfortably he was able to communicate and engage with our son James (aged 10). A brief "boy" chit chat was how the session began as Tate quickly identified James's interests and expectations with regards his rugby skill level and areas he needed or wanted to improve.
Just some of the incredibly helpful and insightful areas for Tate highlighted for James to continue to work on were: the importance of balance and body position when clearing the ball out, hand and arm positioning during passing, and from a safety perspective the importance of keeping his head up and the correct shoulder + leg close with their placement when tackling opposition.
James was pretty much mute for the first 15 minutes! The obvious joy, shock, disbelief and then excitement of having one on one coaching with such an incredible scrum half became more apparent as the session played out.
The session was even better than we had hoped for or imagined. What was truly lovely to see was our son James left with a genuine "spring in his step", and a positive shift in his mindset towards goal setting and training whether it be for school or sport. In the days that followed we heard plenty of "Mum, that was really awesome".
